Article summary
In present Sri Lanka, there is this popular debate over the birthplace of Samma Sambuddha. Instead of believing it is in Indian region, some debates that Samma Sambuddha’s birth place is Sri Lanka. They believe birth place, the bodhi tree where the blessed one got enlightened and passed away place are in Sri Lanka. Not only they those who have this view explains dhamma as without going to these certain places one can’t be an enlightened person. To realize dhamma one should be energized by these places.
These types of views are common and let’s see what it has to do with awakening! Like the view of finding the correct places belongs to the story of Samma Sambuddha and believing that one should visit there to enter into the first level of noble path which is the stream - enterer level is bit harmful for the path of nibbana if one falls into such views.
Although the debates over these topics are natural and common around the world, we should identify the actual danger of these views. Claiming and fighting for the historical facts, language, places etc., is very natural for the worldly beings. As we all know many even fights over the religious fact too. But when it comes to the realization of truth, identifying all the views and its root is the base of Buddhist Teachings in another way.
Finding the powerful energy source and attracting such energize and getting energize by them is quite popular fact in spiritualism. We could see that most of the people get confused between the Spiritualism and Buddhism. So, those who confused seeks these external energy sources to be enlightened or to realize the truth. They believe the support of these noble energies will make them realize the eternal truth at once. But most of them forget the main fact, which is when Samma Sambuddha alive the blessed one himself was the source of all these energy sources, but couldn’t make us all realize the eternal truth. Because that’s not how it works.
To become a stream - enter and even to other realization levels Samma Sambuddha recommended four needful facts. That is the association of the noble friends like people with integrity (Sappurisasaṁsevo), listening to the true noble dhamma (saddhammassavana), proper attention (yonisomanasikāro) and practice in accordance with the Dhamma (dhammānudhammappaṭipatti). If you can see in here two factors are external like association of the noble ones and listening to the true teaching. And other two factors are internal like proper attention and practice in accordance. It’s 50 / 50. That’s why even the greatest Samma Sambuddha couldn’t make us all realize the noble truth. Because when we associate the blessed one and listen to the true teaching, we failed to give our 50% which is proper attention and practice accordingly.
So, when these combination sync to the max then only one can see through beyond their views… beyond the 6 senses… beyond everything they believe as truth… this is not just a simple moment or simple four facts. But those who couldn’t understand the depth of these four facts believe anyone could be the first factor. Even a book or tree or place anything not living also will work. And chanting or listening to audio of dhamma or online recorded explanation or sutta chanting will be enough as the second factor. And the proper attention means just listening to the words properly and remembering or memorizing them will be enough. Or most of the time analyzing what they believe as dhamma and comparing it with own self will be enough. And then the practicing in accordance means something happens later after the first three facts. This is how many believe and understood about these four facts. So, when you mislead with such interpretations it is obvious that you would rely on outer energy sources for your liberation.
There is this deep samadhi which one should achieve while all these four factors are in action together. Then only one could realize the eternal truth which is never heard or not known before. The deep reality which couldn’t understand through the five senses or the 6th sense call MIND. It’s something deep and those who seeks for the true liberation shouldn’t take these as lightly as they appear.
The subject of energy and its effects are there. But they are not the main factors in pure Buddhist teachings. There is a beautifully explained path on how one should develop the necessary skills to realize the eternal truth and how to be a skillful listener. As a wise being you should focus on practicing those clear and beautiful teaching to sharpen your skills.
There are two types of searches: Ignoble search - Anariyapariyesana & Noble search -Ariyapariyesana. And what is ignoble search? There is the case where a person, being subject himself to birth, seeks liberation through what is likewise subject to birth. Being subject himself to aging... illness... death... sorrow... defilement, seeks liberation what is likewise subject to illness... death... sorrow... defilement. Like some believe that external energy sources like the birth place of Samma Sambuddha can liberate us. So, noble search also known as the real truth seeker’s search is deep and you shouldn’t miss it as a human being.
I’ll continue the same topic to next editorial to explain a beautiful teaching of a Samma Sambuddha on the topic of how illusory is to depend on such external facts and why we depend over them. So, you may be able to understand how meaningless are these views which mislead you from the true path of nibbana!
